July 30 (UPI) -- The death toll on the Japanese island of Kyushu from a 7.0 magnitude earthquake climbed to 34, with another 89 people injured, authorities said Thursday.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kyushu, injuring people, trapping others and damaging key sites in Kumamoto. The quake triggered mass evacuations and major transport and factory shutdowns as rescuers raced against time.
