BC teacher fired for failing to report aggressive student
A BC teacher who failed to report that a student had threatened a classmate has been reprimanded by the regulator after they were fired by the school.According to Dec. 17 BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation decision, the teacher has been teaching for nearly 30 years when the incident happened during the 2020 to 2021 school year.The decision said the teacher was teaching a class when a student threatened another student with an unnamed "sharp object."The teacher separated the students, confiscated the sharp object and put it in their desk, and removed the threatening student from the classroom.However, when the threatening student returned to class they managed to retrieve the sharp object from the teacher's desk.An education assistant took the object from the student.When class was finished the teacher let all the pupils leave and didn't report the matter to their superiors.While they were all outside the threatening student approached the classmate and struck them with an object and verbally threatened them.
