Canceled SNES Kid Kirby Game From the Creators of GTA Has Been Recreated on PC

by · DSOGaming

Here is something really special for our Nintendo fans. Back in the 90s, Nintendo contracted DMA Design, the creators of Grand Theft Auto, to work on a Kirby game for the SNES. That game, called Kid Kirby, was never released. However, a fan was able to fully recreate it on PC, and you can play it right now.

The PC version has eight levels and one boss fight. Each level adds new mechanics to keep the gameplay fresh.

Some enemies give Kirby copy abilities when defeated. You can press Right Click or Space to use an ability. However, you cannot pick up another ability while one is active. Beam and Parasol last 10 seconds by default. You can press Right Click or Space again to turn them off early.

The controls appear to be simple. You can press Up/W to enter doors. Moreover, you can press Left/A to slap Kirby upward, and Right/D to slam Kirby downward.

The game also has a paper airplane transformation. Once you have transformed, you can use W/Up to tilt the plane up and S/Down to tilt it down. Tilting down gives you more forward speed but reduces your height. Tilting up gives you more height but slows you down.

This mechanic is based on the paper airplane transformation from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. If you have played that game, it should feel familiar.

To pause the game, you can press P or Enter. This also works in the level hub. You can then continue or return to the hub or main menu.

You can press Space or Enter to skip cutscenes. If you skip the intro by accident, wait on the title screen without pressing anything. The intro will play on its own.

Finally, you can press F to toggle fullscreen from the options menu when using 1024×896 resolution. This hotkey is still there from testing.

You can go ahead and download Kid Kirby from here. Below, you can also find a trailer for it.

While this isn’t a recompilation but a free game, I highly recommend taking a look at the PC recompilations we’ve shared thus far. For instance, you can download unofficial PC ports of Super Mario 64Mario Kart 64Crash Team Racing, and Duke Nukem: Zero Hour. You can also play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeMajora’s MaskPerfect Dark, and Jak & Daxter.

Furthermore, Brian Tate has brought the three classic SNES Donkey Kong Country games to PC. For our SNES fans, we also have a PC port of Star Fox.

And that’s not all of them. We also have the unofficial PC ports of Mario Party 4Sonic UnleashedGoldenEye 007The Legend of Zelda: Twilight PrincessSilent Hill, and Super Smash Bros. 64. Last month, we shared the unofficial PC ports of Gears of War 2 and Syphon Filter. Earlier this month, we shared the PC ports of Diddy Kong Racing and Ace Combat 6. Let’s also not forget the unofficial PC versions of Wave Race 64Blue Dragon, and Pikmin. Finally, you can download the PC ports of Super Mario Strikers, Ninja Gaiden 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Spider-Man: Edge of TimeTekken 3, Mario Kart Wii, and Pokemon Crystal.

Have fun!
