Tottenham hunt new manager after De Zerbi nightmare start
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineTottenham Hotspur are reportedly exploring managerial alternatives as Roberto De Zerbi faces growing uncertainty following the club’s disastrous start to the new Premier League campaign.
Spurs are yet to record a league victory after five matches, with De Zerbi’s side collecting just two points from two goalless draws.
The 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa further deepened the crisis and left Tottenham at the bottom of the table.
The club had invested heavily during the summer transfer window, spending a gross figure of around £380 million on 10 new players after narrowly avoiding Premier League relegation last season.
The poor league form has also been accompanied by an early cup exit, with Tottenham losing 3-1 to Liverpool in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
According to Spanish publication Fichajes, Tottenham’s hierarchy are already considering potential successors to De Zerbi as they assess the situation during the current three-week international break.
A dismissal is reportedly not expected during the break, but the period is being used to examine possible replacements.
De Zerbi’s long-term contract could also make a managerial change costly, with the Italian tied to Tottenham until 2031 and the deal reportedly containing no break clause.
The club could therefore face a compensation package of more than £10 million if it decides to end his tenure, while a mutual termination has also been mentioned as a possible way of reducing the cost.
Among the names being linked with the Tottenham job is Eddie Howe, who has emerged as an early option should the club decide to replace De Zerbi.
Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has also been mentioned, although his current role as head coach of the United States men’s national team makes an immediate return difficult.
Howe has been out of work since leaving Newcastle United shortly before the current season began.

The English coach guided Newcastle to two Champions League qualifications and a Carabao Cup triumph during his nearly five-year spell at St James’ Park.
His availability has made him an attractive option as Tottenham consider how to address their difficult start.
For now, De Zerbi remains in charge, but Spurs’ growing focus on possible successors has placed the manager’s future under renewed scrutiny.
