World Cup: Kane brace sends England past DR Congo into last 16
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineEngland captain Harry Kane scored twice as the Three Lions came from behind to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and book their place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup.
England had looked set for a routine passage into the next round, but DR Congo stunned Thomas Tuchel’s side inside the opening 10 minutes.
Chancel Mbemba’s cross-field pass picked out the unmarked Brian Cipenga, who cut inside before beating Jordan Pickford at his near post to hand the African side an early lead.
The goal left England struggling to find a response, although they almost benefitted from a fortunate ricochet when Declan Rice’s delivery deflected off Ezri Konsa and drifted narrowly wide.
A hydration break helped England regain their composure and they began to create chances.
Noni Madueke raced to the byline before picking out Marcus Rashford, whose low effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
DR Congo nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Yoane Wissa struck the outside of the post from close range.
England continued to press before the interval but were frustrated.

Harry Kane’s appeals for a penalty after a challenge from Lionel Mpasi were waved away by both the referee and VAR, while the DR Congo goalkeeper also produced an outstanding save to deny Kane’s powerful volley.
The pressure continued after the restart, although Rashford wasted a glorious opportunity by firing into the side netting.
England eventually found the breakthrough with 15 minutes remaining. Anthony Gordon delivered a cross into the area and Kane guided his finish into the far corner to restore parity.
The England captain completed the comeback four minutes from time with the decisive goal.
After Jude Bellingham’s initial effort was denied, Kane unleashed a fierce strike from the edge of the area that flew into the roof of the net beyond the helpless Mpasi.
The victory sends England into the last 16, where they will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, while DR Congo bow out after reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time.
