Inter have moved ahead of city rivals AC Milan in the race to sign Cagliari forward Paul Mendy, with the Nerazzurri stepping up their pursuit of the teenage prospect.

According to La Repubblica, Inter are currently leading Milan in the battle for the 2007-born attacker, who has attracted significant interest after a bright start to the campaign.

Milan remain attentive to the situation, but Inter have already carried out extensive groundwork as they look to secure Mendy’s signature.

No formal financial terms have yet been agreed with Cagliari, although Inter’s proactive approach has put them in a strong position in the pursuit.

The club’s push for Mendy has also received the backing of new sporting director Dario Baccin, who has taken a hands-on approach to assessing the youngster.

Baccin has personally travelled to watch Mendy play on several occasions and was reportedly impressed by the forward’s raw potential and attacking ability.

Following his scouting missions, Baccin gave the green light for Inter to proceed with efforts to make a formal move for the Cagliari prospect.

Mendy is the latest Cagliari player to attract interest from some of Italy’s biggest clubs as the club enjoys an impressive start to the Serie A season.
