Advocaat backs Xavi to succeed as Netherlands coach
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineVeteran manager Dick Advocaat has backed Xavi Hernandez to succeed as the new Netherlands head coach ahead of the Spaniard’s first match in charge of the Oranje.
Xavi took charge of his first training session with the Netherlands squad on Monday, beginning a new era after taking over from Ronald Koeman following the 2026 World Cup.
The appointment has received praise from Advocaat, who has managed the Netherlands on three occasions.
Speaking to national broadcaster NOS, Advocaat said: “He was an excellent footballer and I think he is also a very good coach.”
The veteran manager also highlighted the impression Xavi’s profile could make on the Netherlands players.
“Someone with his presence, what he achieved as a footballer, that makes an impression on players.”
Xavi’s arrival brings his playing and coaching experience to the Netherlands setup after a decorated career with Spain and Barcelona.
As a player, he earned 133 caps for Spain and won the 2010 World Cup, as well as the 2008 and 2012 European Championship titles.
As Barcelona coach, Xavi guided the club to the 2022-23 La Liga title and the 2023 Supercopa de Espana during his spell between November 2021 and May 2024.

His possession-based football philosophy is expected to influence the Netherlands as he begins his tenure with the national team.
Xavi is preparing for his first match in charge as the Netherlands begin a new chapter under the former Barcelona midfielder.
Advocaat’s comments have added further backing to the Spaniard as he starts his tenure with the Oranje.
