Xavi sends message to De Ligt as Man Utd defender nears return

New Netherlands head coach Xavi has revealed that he remains in contact with Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt as the centre-back steps up his recovery from a long-term injury.

De Ligt has been out of competitive action for nearly a year after a persistent back problem ruled him out in November 2025.

After six months of conservative treatment failed to resolve the issue, the defender underwent surgery in May, ending his hopes of featuring at the 2026 World Cup.

The Manchester United defender has since returned to training at Carrington and is making progress towards a competitive comeback after the current international break.

Xavi, who is preparing the Netherlands for their Nations League fixtures, said he had maintained contact with both De Ligt and Manchester United during the defender’s rehabilitation.

Xavi said: “Yes, we’re in touch with him and Manchester United.

“He’s been through a tough time.

“I’ve also been in touch with Frenkie de Jong and Xavi Simons recently.

“We need all our players, especially these guys.”

The former Barcelona midfielder also stressed De Ligt’s importance to his plans for the Netherlands.

Xavi added: “He’s doing well. We are checking how are they. We want to check because we need all the players. In this case, De Ligt is an important player. He could be important in the future.”

De Ligt’s recovery has been particularly frustrating after surgery became necessary following months of treatment.

The defender wrote on social media: “After six months of treatment and working hard to get back, surgery was the only option left,” as he expressed his disappointment at missing the World Cup and being unable to help Manchester United.

His return would provide a defensive boost for United, with manager Michael Carrick also monitoring his progress alongside other injured players.

Following United’s 1-1 draw with Fulham, Carrick said: “Amad [Diallo], hopefully by the time we get back, he will have trained with the group. Matta [De Ligt] is working towards his fitness as well.”

De Ligt remains a key figure in Xavi’s plans as the Netherlands prepare for their upcoming Nations League matches against Germany, Serbia and Greece.
