Liverpool star Gakpo ruled out of Netherlands’ remaining matches
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineLiverpool have been handed an injury concern after Cody Gakpo withdrew from the Netherlands squad following a knock sustained during their UEFA Nations League clash against Serbia.
Gakpo started the match in Belgrade but was forced off early in the first half after receiving a heavy tackle from Sasa Lukic, who was shown a yellow card for the challenge.
The 27-year-old has now left the Netherlands camp and returned to Liverpool for further assessment and recovery.
The KNVB confirmed on Monday afternoon that Gakpo had departed the squad, ruling him out of the remainder of the international break.
Despite the Liverpool forward’s withdrawal, the Netherlands have decided not to call up a replacement for their remaining fixtures.
Ruben van Bommel, who impressed after coming off the bench against Serbia, is expected to compete for a starting place, while Noa Lang remains another option in the squad.
Gakpo’s return to Merseyside means Liverpool’s medical staff will assess the extent of the problem, with the initial reports pointing to an ankle issue.
