Transfer News: Arsenal eye £129m move for Julian Alvarez
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineArsenal are preparing to open talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential move for Julian Alvarez as the Premier League champions intensify plans to strengthen their attack ahead of the new season.
The Argentina international has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading transfer targets, with reports in Spain indicating that formal discussions between the clubs are expected to begin soon.
Alvarez has also attracted strong interest from Barcelona, who were initially viewed as favourites to sign the striker during the summer transfer window.
However, negotiations between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have reportedly stalled following tensions between both clubs over the player’s future.
Barcelona are said to have submitted an opening offer worth €100 million for the 26-year-old, but Atletico Madrid rejected the proposal and remain reluctant to sell one of their most important players.
The Spanish club are reportedly demanding as much as €150 million for Alvarez, a fee that would make him one of the most expensive transfers in football history.

Arsenal are believed to be monitoring the situation closely and are exploring whether a deal can be structured despite Atletico’s high valuation.
The North London club could benefit from the presence of sporting director Andrea Berta, who spent more than a decade at Atletico Madrid and maintains strong relationships within the Spanish club.
Reports also suggest Berta has a long-standing connection with Alvarez’s representative, Fernando Hidalgo, which could prove useful during negotiations.
Despite Arsenal’s interest, Alvarez is understood to favour remaining in Spain if he leaves Atletico Madrid, with Barcelona still viewed as his preferred destination.
The striker joined Atletico Madrid as one of Europe’s most highly rated forwards and has continued to attract attention from several leading clubs.
Paris Saint-Germain are also reported to be monitoring developments as the race for his signature gathers momentum.
Arsenal’s pursuit of Alvarez comes as Mikel Arteta looks to build on the club’s Premier League title success and add further firepower to a squad expected to challenge on multiple fronts next season.
The Gunners have been linked with several attacking players in recent months, but Alvarez is now emerging as one of the standout names on their shortlist.
Whether Atletico Madrid soften their stance on a transfer remains to be seen, but Arsenal appear ready to test the Spanish club’s resolve as they explore one of the biggest deals of the summer window.
