MOB National Taekwondo Championship: Athletes converge on Lagos for inaugural event
by Moronfolu Adeyemi · The Eagle OnlineAll is set for the inaugural Michael Opeyemi Bamidele National Taekwondo Championship, which begins on Friday, September 18, at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
Athletes from all states of the federation and Abuja have arrived in Lagos for the competition, alongside clubs from across the country, while paramilitary bodies are also expected to participate.
The tournament is sponsored by Opeyemi Bamidele, a former Commissioner for Sports and former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State and currently a Senator of the Federal Republic.
The competition is expected to form part of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation’s build-up for future international engagements, including the Africa Games and Olympic Games.
Bamidele expressed excitement about the possibility of discovering fresh talents through the tournament.
Bamidele said: “We always look forward to having new talents emerge from all the sports. It is important to engage youths in positive areas for their respective talents and careers.”
The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, organisers of the event, has assured that new equipment that meets global standards will be used for the championship.

The President of the NTF, Tayo Popoola, told our correspondent on Thursday that preparations for the two-day event had been completed.
She said the new equipment would provide additional motivation for athletes to give their best in the first edition of the competition.
The Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium will host the event, with athletes set to compete as the inaugural MOB National Taekwondo Championship takes centre stage in Lagos.
