Peter V’landys Quits Racing NSW Role After 22 Years

Peter V’landys has stepped down as Racing NSW chief executive after 22 years in the role, as he prepares to take up a landmark position with the NRL.

Racing NSW announced on Thursday that the 66-year-old will leave his position when his contract expires in November.

V’landys described his departure as a sad moment after more than two decades in the role, saying he had put his “heart and soul” into racing.

“I have been fortunate to work with outstanding, loyal and hardworking Boards of Directors and staff,” V’landys said.

“I was just a member of a dedicated team of professionals who were able to generate outstanding outcomes for Racing NSW.

“As a team, we went from a struggling jurisdiction to a world-leading jurisdiction. I take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been in our team. I will miss them greatly and I wish the industry every success.”

V’landys played a major role in transforming NSW racing during his tenure and drove the creation of The Everest, now the richest event in Australian horse racing.

His decision to leave Racing NSW also comes into focus because of comments he made six years ago about the importance of separating boards from management.

“There needs to be a segregation between the board and management,” V’landys said at the time.

“I’ve always believed in proper corporate governance, so it would be hypocritical to do anything other than that.”

V’landys’ latest move comes amid criticism of his leadership of the NRL, following confirmation earlier this week that the NRL grand final will have no entertainment act.

He has also divided opinion over his efforts to expand the competition through new entrants, including the Dolphins, Bears and Chiefs.

During his time leading the NRL, V’landys has also overseen the move of the season opener to Las Vegas, while Auckland will host a State of Origin match next year.

His departure from Racing NSW will take effect when his current contract expires in November, bringing his 22-year tenure at the organisation to an end.
