Greek Fighter Pilot Stuns Thessaloniki Crowd With Air Manoeuvres
by Kosta Papadopoulos · Greek City TimesA Greek F-16 fighter jet from the Hellenic Air Force’s Zeus Demonstration Team performed a test flight over Thessaloniki on Monday afternoon ahead of Greece’s October 28 national anniversary celebrations, delivering a spectacular display above the Hellenic Navy’s flagship frigate Kimon.
The sight proved particularly striking because the frigate had been anchored at Thessaloniki’s port for several days. For the first time, residents had the opportunity to watch the daring manoeuvres of an upgraded F-16 flying over the Greek Navy’s flagship.
The F-16 is a mainstay of Greece’s air defence operations over the Aegean Sea. Greek fighter jets regularly conduct interceptions and simulated aerial engagements as they seek to prevent Turkish fighter aircraft, drones and reconnaissance planes from entering Greek airspace.
Monday’s display unfolded before astonished residents, with the F-16’s engines roaring overhead and the frigate Kimon lying silently in the port below.
The scene evoked a simulated combat scenario, bringing together two of the Greek Armed Forces’ principal military assets: the Hellenic Air Force’s fighter aircraft and the Hellenic Navy’s modern frigate. Their joint presence offered a dramatic demonstration of Greece’s air and naval capabilities.
