Before officially entering the 2026 NBA Playoffs, presented by Google, with the Boston Celtics, Spain’s Hugo Gonzalez revisited his elite European pedigree to compare the intensity of the NBA and EuroLeague postseasons.

After a consistent rookie campaign in the league based in North America, where the 20-year-old Madrid native appeared in 74 games of the 2025-26 Regular Season, the transition to the NBA’s playoff atmosphere represents a significant shift from his tenure with Real Madrid. Having played 36 games in Europe’s premier club competition over the previous two seasons, including some postseason appearances with Los Blancos, Gonzalez is no stranger to pressure, though he acknowledges the structural differences in his new environment.

“In Europe, we got like a best-of-five. Here it’s best-of-seven. So, I just expect some long rounds,” the Spanish shooting guard remarked when comparing the formats.

He understands that the NBA’s extended schedule demands a different level of stamina and mental consistency.

“Obviously, it’s a longer season. So, I also feel like the teams already got their ideas, set them up, and they know what they’re going to do,” he mentioned. “The strategy is to win every single game. Maybe you can have one bad day in the whole playoffs, because playoffs are not waiting for anybody, and if you want to win, you’ve got to have the 100% of yourself.”

Selected 28th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, presented by State Farm, Gonzalez has spent the year adapting to a rotation featuring stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. While his minutes have been limited in the opening round against the Philadelphia 76ers, his mindset remains rooted in the professional discipline he developed with Madrid.

“Just stay ready. You don’t know how many times you’re going to play. One day, maybe you’re going to play like 20, 25, then the next week you’re going to play less,” he explained regarding his role with the C’s. “Just staying ready, staying focused, and trusting that the work is going to be there and the opportunity is going to be back and forth.”

For Gonzalez, the goal remains simple as he aims to translate his success from the EuroLeague to the TD Garden. “I try to get the work done every single game,” he stressed.
