Newcastle United transfer rumours assessed – Jonathan David hope, 'dream' Sandro Tonali move

by · ChronicleLive

Newcastle United are set to enter the January transfer window in a complex place. Whilst ambition remains high at St. James' Park, they are navigating a difficult 2025/26 campaign marred by injuries and the fallout from the summer's deals.

Eddie Howe's team changed drastically over the summer with Alexander Isak's departure tied to the arrival of Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, amongst others. New beginnings have since been impacted by fitness issues across the squad, leaving the Magpies down in 11th after 17 matches.

But, the season is far from over as the gap to the Premier League's top-four is still short, a Champions League dream remains alive and the bid to retain the Carabao Cup is still ongoing.

Therefore the January window is a chance for Newcastle to show their ambition, albeit in line with the strict Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) that have constrained the club in recent seasons.

Chronicle Live looks at the latest Newcastle transfer rumours leading up to the next window of opportunity.

Jonathan David

Newcastle did not sign Jonathan David in the summer when his contract at LOSC Lille expired, and he instead moved to Juventus. There, the attacker has endured a challenging start to life with a single goal in 15 appearances.
Therefore according to Tutto Mercato, he is already considering an exit - especially knowing the 2026 FIFA World Cup is around the corner.

Sandro Tonali

...Tutto Mercato's report, alongside another from La Gazzetta dello Sport, would suggest Magpies midfielder Sandro Tonali is a 'dream' transfer target for Juve.
The Old Lady are "crazy" about his signing, in fact, and would go all-out to ensure his arrival.
They do have financial restrictions, which would be helped if David was included in a player-plus-cash exchange.

Darryl Bakola

Newcastle are reportedly keeping a close eye on Darryl Bakola's situation at Olympique Marseille.
According to Foot Mercato, the French club are actively trying to extend the 18-year-old midfielder's contract. They face pressure from Arsenal, Chelsea, and now Newcastle - who got an up-close look at the player in the Champions League earlier this season.

Joelinton

Joelinton is back on the radar of Saudi Pro League clubs, writes TEAM talk.
The midfielder turns 30 next August and Newcastle have been left to consider the benefits of parting ways with a star whose value will only deplete rapidly as time passes, with the potential for multiple replacement signings.

William Osula

Sky Sports Germany say Toon chiefs are in ongoing negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt for the loan transfer of William Osula.
The striker has already agreed terms and is waiting for the clubs to settle their agreement, which would also include a purchase option.(Image: Getty Images)
