Arsenal could end Alexander Isak interest with Premier League January transfer move

Arsenal could be set to finally end their interest in Newcastle United's Alexander Isak - at least in the short term. The Gunners have long been linked with a move for the Magpies' Swedish hotshot, although United are hoping to keep their big-name stars as they build for the future.

Isak has again been one of the Premier League's top players this season, with his Boxing Day goal against Aston Villa taking him to 12 for the season in all competitions - and 21 Premier League strikes in 2024. That form, coupled with Newcastle's admission that they may need to sell some players in order to be able to spend in forthcoming transfer windows, has led to speculation over his future.

United are understandably keen to keep their top talent at St James' Park, but Arsenal have been among a number of clubs linked with a £100m-plus move for the striker. However, with winger Bukayo Saka set to miss several months through injury, Mikel Arteta and Co could be set to change their focus for the January transfer window.

Reports have linked Arsenal with a move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha - with any deal likely to put interest in Isak on hold at the very least. Like Isak, Cunha is enjoying a fine season with Wolves, and his goal against Manchester United on Boxing Day took him to 10 for the season.

The 25-year-old has two years left on his contract after signing from Atletico Madrid for £44m, but The Telegraph report that he has been on Arsenal's radar before Saka's injury. He can play across the frontline, but while Wolves are keen to keep their star man, a sizeable bid could be enough to see a deal done.

Cunha is awaiting the outcome of an FA hearing into a heated post-match clash following Wolves' 2-1 defeat to Ipswich in what proved to be Gary O'Neil's final game in charge. The forward was seen clashing with Ipswich backroom staff after the game and could yet face a suspension if charges are upheld.
