Rangers player’s agent looking for ‘loophole’ to secure January transfer

by · Sport Witness

Last summer, Rangers allowed Óscar Cortés to join Sporting Gijón on loan after Danny Röhl’s predecessor, Russell Martin, left him out of his plans at Ibrox.

The winger struggled for minutes in Glasgow, mainly due to injuries. They wanted him to enjoy regular game time in Spain but that hasn’t happened yet.

The Rangers man has played 353 minutes from eight matches for the Segunda División side and hasn’t made an appearance in the league for a month. On December 1st, La Voz de Asturias reported Röhl’s side are prepared to recall the 22-year-old in the winter market.

El Comercio now report Rangers and the Colombia international aren’t happy with his situation at Sporting Gijón. The option of cutting short his loan stay is on the table. This will depend on the Rangers owned player finding another club in January.

He played three matches for the Scottish club this season before moving to Spain. FIFA rules don’t allow a player to be registered with three different clubs in the same season.

Cortés’ agent and Rangers are ‘reviewing his statistics and whether, according to the current legal framework, there is any loophole’ that can allow him to be registered with a third club.

The possibility exists by moving to a league where the season starts from the next calendar year. For example, the Swedish football calendar runs between March and November. The same applies to a few leagues in South America.

Sources have informed El Comercio that there’s confidence Cortés will find a new club next year.

Cortés’ situation is likely to be clarified in the coming weeks. The attacker will try to convince manager Borja Jiménez if he has to finish the season with the Spanish club.
