Newcastle United have reached an agreement with Freiburg to sign Johan Manzambi in a record €60m deal.

Sky Germany report that the Switzerland midfielder is ‘on the verge’ of a move to Newcastle after the two sides reached a full agreement for a deal worth around €60m.

€60m package

According to Sky’s exclusive information, Newcastle and Freiburg have reached a full agreement for the 20-year-old. The overall package is worth around €60m, a new record for the German club.

Newcastle are now working on finalising the last few details on the player’s side. They are now the clear favourite to sign the young midfielder.

Aston Villa were also in the running to sign the central midfielder. That was particularly the case after Amadou Onana picked up a cruciate ligament injury at the World Cup with Belgium.

Manzambi is currently focused on finishing the World Cup with Switzerland. He’s suffering from a bruised knee at this moment in times but that is not thought to be a serious problem.

World Cup star

The youngster has been one of the standout performers for the Swiss side at this year’s tournament. Indeed, with three goals and two assists to his name so far, he’s been one of the star performers overall.

That has prompted Newcastle to spend big on the 20-year-old. A €60m package means they are paying €10m more than his current valuation on Transfermarkt.

The Magpies have money to spend on their midfield after selling Sandro Tonali to Tottenham in a €100m deal. They’re now in the process of finalising the deal for Manzambi, while Sean Steur is set to arrive from Ajax in a €27m deal as well.

With an agreement now in place with Freiburg, now all they need is to finalise the agreement with Johan Manzambi and get their latest summer addition over the line.
