Coventry City frontrunners for signing after positive talks – Rivals intensify efforts to snatch player
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessCoventry City face the risk of missing out on signing Göztepe SK’s Anthony Dennis, after making advances.
On June 24th, Sport Witness covered claims from Nigeria that Coventry City are getting closer towards signing him.
A day later, we relayed news that Trabzonspor are ready to challenge the Sky Blues for his signature.
Göztepe chairman Rasmus Ankersen had made a trip to England to hold talks with Frank Lampard’s side. This may give them an edge in the transfer race.
Coventry City face Bundesliga threat
Footy-Africa now claim the newly promoted Premier League side have held positive talks to bring Anthony Dennis to England.
Coventry City are now the ‘frontrunners’ to sign the Nigerian, who initially joined Göztepe SK’s youth team in 2023. He made his way into their first team a year later and was a regular in the last two seasons.
The defensive midfielder played 2,474 minutes from 31 matches and missed three games because of suspension [two matches] and illness last season. His development hasn’t gone unnoticed, especially in Germany, where the ‘interest has intensified’.
RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, Union Berlin and 1. FSV Mainz 05 are all in the picture to sign the Coventry City target.
The latter two have monitored him while RB Leipzig and Eintracht Frankfurt are emerging as contenders. These clubs could challenge Frank Lampard’s side to snatch Dennis from their clutches.
Player’s criteria to make decision
Galatasaray have also shown interest in the midfielder and have made direct contact with Göztepe SK.
Sources close to the Nigerian have informed Footy-Africa that he and his agent will closely evaluate every offer on the table.
Anthony Dennis will decide on his next club that will offer regular football and to continue his development. The suitor must also meet the Turkish club’s €8m price.
The Nigerian’s contract expires in 2027, and without a renewal in sight, Göztepe have to sell him this summer.
Coventry City, who are in the lead, can wrap up this operation quickly by convincing the player and offering €8m to his club.
