Sunderland approach described as timid – That could all change next week

Sunderland have been linked with AS Roma’s Matias Soule, with a potential transfer in the initial stages.

On Wednesday, Sport Witness covered Florent Ghisolfi’s leading role in the chase for the Argentine. He is keen on signing Soule and initial contact has been made.

This came weeks after Aston Villa were in the picture to sign the attacking midfielder. At that point, AS Roma faced financial concerns due to FFP obligations and had to make sales to stay within their limits.

Despite the opportunity, the Villans never made a formal move for the Roma. Other suitors like Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart also never went past simple enquiries about his situation.

Now, a clearer picture about Sunderland’s interest has emerged.

Nothing beyond simple enquiry

Alfredo Pedulla reports that Regis Le Bris’ side have only made a ‘timid investigation’ about signing the 23-year-old.

So far, they haven’t gone into too much detail. That can obviously change later in the window.

Once the Giallorossi sign another attacking player, Sunderland’s move can gain pace.

Gazzetta dello Sport have a similar stance. The newspaper note the Black Cats are the only club to make an enquiry for Soule, and next week could be key in their favour.

By then, Roma should have made progress in the move for his replacement. This will leave them in a better position to sell the former Juventus player.

Patience could be key

Usually, Gian Piero Gasperini doesn’t wait too long for major signings to be made. In January, he called out the Roma ownership for their failure to execute the right deals and he’ll want things done quickly again.

That is exactly why they should be expected to make a high-profile signing in attack. This will play in Sunderland’s favour, who should keep monitoring the situation with interest.
