“What happens…” – Tottenham player refuses to commit future to Spurs amid claims of interest
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessRoberto De Zerbi helped Tottenham Hotspur narrowly avoided relegation last season, and now it’s time to build.
Spurs appointed the Italian as manager in March, and his arrival didn’t favour Lucas Bergvall.
The Sweden international played 113 minutes under De Zerbi and was on the bench for Tottenham’s last two matches.
On June 9th, Bergvall said it was a tough season for the Premier League side.
When asked whether he’s thinking about leaving the club, he said: “It’s not something I’m focusing on right now. It’s been a tough season, as I said. But now the focus is on the World Cup and being here.”
Tottenham player coy on exit claims
Last weekend, The Athletic’s David Ornstein reported Lucas Bergvall has informed Spurs of his desire to seek a new challenge this summer.
There’s been claims of Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund interest.
Late on Thursday, the Tottenham Hotspur player made his third World Cup appearance in Sweden’s 1-1 draw with Japan.
After the match, he spoke to the Swedish media and Fotbollskanalen have relayed comments about his future.
When asked about the latest claims about him wanting to leave and interest from other clubs, he said: “Right now, I’m just trying to focus on the World Cup. Whatever happens after that, I’ll deal with it then. I’m fully focused on the World Cup.”
Asked whether these claims are accurate, Bergvall explained: “As I said: I’m fully focused on the World Cup.”
When asked whether there’s any discussion between his agent and Tottenham, he added: “I’m fully focusing on the World Cup. I’m here with Sweden, and we’re going to try to make a good impression in the U.S. Whatever happens after that, we’ll deal with it then.”
Developments unlikely until after World Cup
Sweden finished third in Group F, a point behind second placed Japan and three behind the Netherlands.
They have already qualified for the Round of 32. Until the national team finish their World Cup campaign, there’s unlikely to be more clarity on Lucas Bergvall’s future.
He has a contract until 2031, and Transfermarkt value him at €35m.
