“Newcastle crazy about him” – Magpies keen on signing key player, transfer strategy for January explained

Newcastle United are in the picture to sign FC Porto’s Victor Froholdt and will face tough competition from other clubs in bringing him to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old’s performances and potential have caught Newcastle United’s attention. He graduated from FC Copenhagen’s academy and made his first team debut in 2023, managing eight goals and six assists from 62 matches.

In June 2025, the Danish club sold him to the Dragons for a reported fee of €20m. The midfielder quickly cemented a place at Porto and has been a regular so far.

Last season, Froholdt played 3,984 minutes from 51 matches, scoring eight goals and contributing seven assists. He has three goals from 10 matches this season.

Newcastle United in suitors list

The youngster’s impressive debut season with Porto had resulted in interest from several clubs. However, a move never took shape in the summer window. He continues to draw attention from a few clubs, including Matthias Jaissle’s side.

Earlier this week, Sport Witness covered a report from Portugal explaining that Newcastle United Magpies officials watched Porto’s Champions League defeat to PSV Eindhoven. The Magpies are working on potential arrivals in the winter market.

Victor Froholdt played 76 minutes, and Tottenham Hotspur scouts had also followed him in September.

Tipsbladet points out summer rumours linking him to the Tyneside club and others and covers the latest about Newcastle United.

January move unlikely for Froholdt

The outlet contacted journalist Gianni Di Marzio for an update. He covers about Newcastle United’s interest and Porto’s stance about letting Victor Froholdt leave in January.

“Froholdt is a key player for Porto. He was the player of the year in Porto and in the Portuguese league,” he said.

“It is really difficult to buy Porto players, so even if Newcastle and other clubs are crazy about him, it is unlikely that he will be allowed to move in January. It is not Porto’s strategy to sell their best players in January.”

The Denmark international has a contract until 2030. This puts the Portuguese club in a comfortable position to defend their transfer strategy for the winter market. Therefore, the Magpies and other suitors have to wait at least until next summer.
