Manchester City network tracking World Cup standout – Interesting transfer idea

by · Sport Witness

Manchester City’s scouting network continues to cast a wide net across world football. Fresh reports from Mexico claim Erik Lira remains on the radar of the City Football Group following his impressive World Cup campaign.

Mexican insider Ike Carrera reports the Cruz Azul midfielder is still being monitored by CFG ahead of the summer transfer window.

Rather than a switch to Enzo Maresca’s squad, the current expectation is that Troyes could become his destination. If the group decides to formalise their interest, he could move.

The French club, which is part of the City Football Group, is presented as the most realistic landing spot should negotiations progress.

World Cup raises profile

Erik Lira’s performances for Mexico at the 2026 World Cup appear to have strengthened his position in the market.

The defensive midfielder was one of the country’s standout performers despite their last-16 exit against England. That has attracted attention from several European clubs.

According to the same report, City Football Group are far from alone in following the 26-year-old. Real Betis, Ajax and Feyenoord have all made enquiries over his situation. Meanwhile, Roma had already been linked with him earlier in the summer.

For now, however, there is an important caveat. The Mexican claims state that none of those clubs have submitted a formal offer to Cruz Azul.

That leaves the situation firmly in the exploratory phase, with interest yet to develop into concrete negotiations.

What happens next

Erik Lira is currently enjoying a short holiday after Mexico’s World Cup campaign. Unless a transfer gathers momentum over the coming weeks, he is expected to report back to Cruz Azul for the start of the Apertura 2026 season.

Whether Lira eventually follows the CFG pathway remains to be seen, but the latest reports indicate he remains a player of interest inside the group, even if there is still some distance between that interest and a formal bid.
