“He deserves more respect” – Journalist comes out fighting for Liverpool star

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk “deserves much more respect” from the Netherlands after deciding to continue his international career.

That’s the opinion of journalist Noa Vahle. Speaking on Nieuws van de Dag, relayed by FC Update, she insisted that the 35-year-old does not deserve the criticism he has receive in his home nation.

Netherlands criticism

Van Dijk was included in the Netherlands’ squad for the upcoming international break, after talks with new manager Xavi.

Sport Witness reported how the Spaniard had sought out talks with the Liverpool captain, including during the recent Champions League win over Atletico Madrid.

He’s continuing his international career, having previously been non-committal on his future after the loss to Morrocco in the round of 16 at the World Cup.

The Liverpool centre-back had faced criticism because of that result, but Vahle believes it is unjustified.

“He (Xavi) is opting for Nathan Aké and Virgil van Dijk again,” she said.

“I think that makes perfect sense – working towards a sort of transitional period. You also shouldn’t underestimate the fact that Van Dijk has been our captain for a very long time; you don’t just walk away from that.

“If he told Xavi during that conversation that he still wants to go for it, then I think he certainly deserves that chance. You are certainly allowed to be critical, but I fully understand why he is still in the squad.”

Deserves much more respect

Presented Thomas van Groningen the pointed out that Virgil Van Dijk remains an undisputed starter for Liverpool. It seems he believes that means there shouldn’t be questions about his inclusion for the Netherlands.

Vahle agrees and even believes that the Liverpool star deserves more respect than he is currently receiving.

“He has had a fantastic career and has shown incredible quality. He has won numerous trophies in the best league in the world, the Premier League,” she added.

“He is the captain of the Dutch national team, and I do feel he deserves much more respect. Have we been too dismissive of him? I think people too easily assume we’re moving into a new era and will simply do so without Virgil.

“Setting aside the fact that you are certainly entitled to be critical of his performances for the national team – he is the captain, after all, so perhaps more is expected of him – I fully understand why he is still in the squad.”
