“I don’t want to get carried away” – Man United, Aston Villa and Ipswich target responds to speculation
by Pedro Reinert · Sport WitnessManchester United, Aston Villa and Ipswich Town are all being credited with interest in Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill after his World Cup heroics. Now fresh claims from Argentina suggests the San Lorenzo star’s next move could be edging closer.
Gill emerged as one of the standout goalkeepers at the World Cup, producing a series of outstanding displays for Paraguay.
He was named FIFA’s Player of the Match against both Germany and France. His penalty shootout heroics against the former helping Gustavo Alfaro’s side reach the last 16 before eventually bowing out of the tournament.
According to Argentine newspaper Clarín, the goalkeeper’s performances have now placed him on the radar of multiple European clubs.
Alongside previously reported interest from Ipswich and Aston Villa, the newspaper backs up British claims that Manchester United are also following his situation ahead of the summer transfer window. Lazio and Torino are named as admirers from Italy.
Villa’s interest of course is described as being dependent on the future of Emiliano Martínez. The Birmingham club potentially entering the market for a new goalkeeper if the Argentina international leaves.
Gill himself addresses transfer speculation
Gill was asked about the growing transfer rumours after returning to Paraguay. He admitted he has been informed about interest from Europe, although he stressed there is nothing concrete yet.
“I can’t say yes or no. They told me there is interest, but not a formal offer,” he explained. “I don’t want to get carried away. We’ll sit down and speak with the club to see what is best.”
The goalkeeper also acknowledged that his contract contains a release clause.
“I have a clause in my contract and I think it has to be respected. Then it depends on the club. If it’s good for both parties, we’ll have to reach an agreement.”
Clarín states that clause stands at approximately €6m (£5.2m), a figure that would be well within reach for Premier League clubs.
Financial reality could shape San Lorenzo’s decision
Orlando Gill’s World Cup performances could hardly have come at a better time for San Lorenzo.
The Argentine club continue to battle serious financial problems, with Clarín reporting liabilities approaching 100 billion Argentine pesos. Gill is increasingly viewed as the player capable of generating the funds needed to ease that situation.
San Lorenzo own 50% of the goalkeeper’s economic rights after purchasing that share for around €430,000/£370,000 in January 2025, although the club are now hoping to receive more than the value of his release clause following his rise in reputation.
His record certainly strengthens that case. Gill has made 59 appearances for San Lorenzo, keeping 29 clean sheets, while his displays across 11 senior appearances for Paraguay have transformed him into one of South America’s most sought-after goalkeepers.
Clarín adds that incoming manager Néstor Gorosito is already considering potential replacements, suggesting there is an acceptance inside the club that Gill’s departure could be difficult to prevent.
