UEFA Ref Watch: Sunderland get controversial ref, but history may be on their side

Just like Bournemouth, it appears that Sunderland have not managed to dodge the controversial referee curse for their start in Europe.

Sport Witness reported earlier today how Bournemouth’s referee for their trip to Real Sociedad had been mired in controversy. He’s also been called the worse referee in the world by some.

Ref controversy

Well, it seems Sunderland have a similar situation on their hands. Their game against AZ Alkmaar this week is set to be refereed by Jérémie Pignard. And he’s also found himself him at the centre of controversy recently.

First up, there’s a particularly busy start to Ligue 1. The 39-year-old has already issued nine yellow cards across two Ligue1 games. He was also in charge for the Super Cup clash between Lens and Paris Saint-Germain.

That saw him as the focus as he sent of Lens’ Kylian Antonio for a rough tackle then PSG’s Nuno Mees for an elbow on Michal Skoras. That particular decision ‘sparked considerable debate’ in France say Voetbal Niuews.

Fortunately for Sunderland and AZ Alkmaar, it’s the first time he’s refereed either of their games. So, there’s no lingering controversies or concerns to worry about on that front.

History on Sunderland’s side

Whether that’s of comfort to either side, remains to be seen. At this point both Sunderland and AZ will surely just be hoping to dodge any cards, which he seems more than happy to dish out.

Pignard is no stranger to Dutch clubs, though. He’s previously served as VAR for the Europa League clash between Olympiacos and FC Twente. He also acted as the fourth official during a Champions League clash between Ajax and Olympiacos. Neither of the Dutch clubs won those games, so perhaps that’s something for Sunderland to focus on.

For now, they will surely just be hoping that they can avoid any controversy and enjoy their long-awaited return to European football.
