Transfer to Leeds United turns into nightmare – January rescue move presented
by Naveen Ullal · Sport WitnessFC Köln can offer Sebastiaan Bornauw an escape route from Leeds United in the winter market, according to Express.de.
The centre-back joined the Whites from VfL Wolfsburg in July and made his debut in Leeds United’s EFL Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in August.
Bornauw waited until December to make his Premier League debut when he came off the bench in Leeds United’s league win over Chelsea. Daniel Farke also brought him on late in the 3-3 draw against Liverpool.
Back in October, claims from Belgium insisted the defender’s adventure at Elland Road has turned into a nightmare.
FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler is keen on signing a defender in January due to injuries.
Earlier this week, their vice-president, Jörg Alvermann, said they have a ‘financial leeway’ to carry out signings next month. He said: “We are able to act!”
Express.de relay that and explain that the Bundesliga side are looking for a defender. They want a high quality option who can arrive on loan and ready to go.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Aurele Amenda and TSG Hoffenheim’s Kevin Akpoguma are in their list. The report adds FC Köln could look abroad, where Bornauw remains a target.
The 26-year-old was at the German club for two years between 2019 and 2021, and they could bring him back on loan next month.
FC Köln have the funds, likely to pay a loan fee and at least cover part of his salary. If the move doesn’t materialise, Express.de say the German club ‘wouldn’t be unhappy’.
