“Dutch Giroud” – National team calls increasing for in-form Burnley star

by · Sport Witness

Calls for Burnley star Zian Flemming to be given his chance by the Netherlands this summer are increasing, with journalist Kenneth Pérez now adding his name to the list.

ESPN report on comments from him today. He believes that Flemming could be the Netherlands answer to Olivier Giroud.

Impressive numbers at Burnley

Zian Flemming has been impressing since joining Burnley in a permanent €8.3m deal last summer. He had spent the previous season on loan from Millwall.

This season he’s managed nine goals in 25 games in the Premier League and often been the Clarets star man, despite their relegation from the Premier League. He currently has four goals in his last seven games, despite Burnley not winning since February.

Despite impressing in the Premier League, he’s yet to get his shot for the Netherlands. That’s also despite growing injury concerns about Memphis Depay.

Flemming, for his part, has made it clear he believes that he’s deserving of the chance. And there have been calls from various journalists for Ronald Koeman to give him his shot.

Sport Witness even covered comments from Leo Driessen on the matter earlier this month.

Kenneth Pérez adds his voice

Now another journalist, Kenneth Pérez, is adding his voice to the mix. He believes that the Burnley striker could play a crucial role, like Olivier Giroud once did for France.

“He could easily become the Dutch Giroud,” he said.

“France had world-class players, but not the absolute top striker. So, you have to look for someone who is good for the team. You can say that it is your most important position, but it is also possible that you fill the striker position in a completely different way.

“If you reach double figures in the Premier League, which is too ambitious for 99 out of 100 players in the Netherlands.

“But the Netherlands views football very differently than most countries. He doesn’t really fit in there entirely when it comes to beautiful technique and graceful play.”
