Manchester City player asks to withdraw from squad – Insistence forcing release

Manchester City‘s Rayan Aït-Nouri pushed to leave Algeria during the ongoing international break despite attempts to diffuse the situation. 

The left-back hasn’t enjoyed a good run since moving to the Etihad from Wolverhampton Wanderers in June 2025.

His situation at Manchester City has become worse since Enzo Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola in the summer.

To put it in context, the 25-year-old played 15 minutes in the Champions League win over FC Porto and 90 minutes EFL Cup win over Norwich City. He’s yet to feature in the league under the Italian.

The Fennecs have appointed Brahim Hemdani as their new manager, after the World Cup. He included the 25-year-old in the squad for this international break.

On Friday, the manager started Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jaouen Hadjam ahead of Rayan Aït-Nouri in the 3-1 win over Zambia.

Hadjam opened the scoring in the second minute before Zambia netted the equaliser in the 57th minute. Hemdani, who had planned to bring on the Manchester City player, sent him back to the bench after the equaliser.

Algeria regained the lead and the coach then called up Aït-Nouri, who refused to get on the pitch. This resulted in anger and annoyance within the national team camp.

Rayan Aït-Nouri wasn’t in ‘best spirits’ before he arrived at the camp and was hoping to take advantage of the break to enjoy game time, which wasn’t available at Manchester City.

He wanted minutes to ‘boost his morale’ but suffered a blow when Jaouen Hadjam was in the playing XI against Zambia. He didn’t express his displeasure initially.

The outlet states: ‘Sources confirmed the pivotal moment, on which Aït-Nouri’s anger and protest toward Ibrahim Hamdani and Antar Yahia were based, was neither clear nor complete, and appeared fragmented according to the video clips circulating about the incident.’

‘The straw that broke the camel’s back was the ‘well-intentioned’ intervention by team director Moussa Saïb. To calm the player down and try to defuse the situation. That’s when Aït-Nouri’s controversial behaviour came to light.’

Expected apology from Etihad fullback 

Brahim Hemdani was expecting Rayan Aït-Nouri to apologise to his teammates and his coaching staff. Instead, he asked to leave the national team camp.

The Citizens defender felt ‘lack of appreciation, respect and support’ from the national team. He believes their ‘behaviour that was completely at odds with his expectations.’

Therefore, he requested to withdraw from Brahim Hemdani’s squad immediately after the clash against Zambia.

Algeria tried to calm things down and diffuse the situation before forcibly accepting his request because of his insistence to leave and cited disciplinary measure to close the case.

There’s a possibility of the player not wanting to represent Algeria in the future, probably whilst the current coaching staff is in charge.
