Newcastle United meet player’s agents – Now face Premier League transfer battle

by · Sport Witness

Newcastle United’s ongoing interest in Grêmio defender Viery is now facing competition, with Brighton & Hove Albion also moving into the picture ahead of the summer window.

The 21-year-old centre-back has quickly become one of the more closely watched young defenders in Brazil. As a result, what initially looked like a straightforward Premier League track is starting to look more crowded.

Newcastle United interest justified

Newcastle have already sent a scout to watch Viery live this season. That visit came during the state championship final – a fierce local derby -, where he impressed again.

Despite playing just nine matches in the current campaign, the 21-year-old is already posting strong defensive and possession numbers.

According to Fotmob, he averages 10.01 defensive actions per game, alongside 3.89 ball recoveries and 6.79 clearances. In duels, he wins 58.1% overall and 60% of his aerial battles.

On the ball, he shows composure that aligns with modern centre-back demands. Viery completes 86.5% of his passes, attempts over 55 passes per match, and connects on 45.8% of his long balls.

He also averages 80 touches per game, underlining his involvement in build-up phases.

He is left-footed, mobile and comfortable in possession. Those traits are in high demand, particularly among clubs that prioritise build-up from the back. In addition, he has shown he can handle pressure in big matches despite limited senior experience.

Competition builds for Newcastle target

Viery’s rise has created a profile that fits several European recruitment models. And ESPN Brazil says Brighton are now also following the player, while Benfica are understood to be the most advanced suitors at this stage.

Since his debut in 2025, he has made 30 official appearances, scoring once and adding one assist. This season, he has become a regular starter under Luís Castro, which has accelerated external interest.

Newcastle representatives have already met the player’s agents last month. He fits their strategy of searching young players in Brazil with development potential and resale value.

Brighton, meanwhile, have built a reputation for identifying and developing emerging talent before their price explodes. Their presence in this race feels consistent with that approach.

Benfica’s involvement also matters. The Portuguese club often act quickly in South America and have a strong track record of developing and selling defenders to bigger European leagues.

Price, clause and market dynamics

Viery signed a new contract with Grêmio earlier this year, running until December 2029. That deal includes a €50m (£43m) release clause for clubs abroad.

However, the club have now taken a clearer position on negotiations. Local outlet Zero Hora says Grêmio have set an asking price of €25m (£21.5m) to open talks with European clubs.

So Newcastle have done early groundwork, but Brighton’s entry increases competition. Benfica’s presence adds further pressure, especially given their experience in this market.

Viery’s performances over the next few months will be decisive. If he continues to start regularly and deliver in key matches, interest is likely to intensify quickly.

At €15m (£13m), the opportunity is clear. The question now is which club will move first.
