Leeds United cup hero growing frustrated with reduced role – Exit now on agenda
by Pedro Reinert · Sport WitnessLeeds United have just seen Lucas Perri drag them to Wembley. However, that still does not appear to have solved the wider issue around the Brazilian goalkeeper’s place in Daniel Farke’s plans.
The 27-year-old was the hero against West Ham United on Sunday, saving two penalties as Leeds United reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since the 1986-87 season. This was after a 2-2 draw and a 4-2 shootout win. The reward is a semi-final against Chelsea later this month.
That is why fresh claims from Brazil are worth noting. Even if this currently looks more like market noise than anything advanced, it remains notable.
Local journalist Jorge Nicola says Perri is frustrated with his situation at Leeds after arriving expecting to be the clear first-choice goalkeeper. Instead, he now finds himself limited largely to cup matches.
There is enough around Leeds United to make that claim sound plausible. Perri started the season as the expected number one – and he was loving it. The Premier League itself flagged him before the campaign as the likely first-choice option at Elland Road.
However, Karl Darlow has taken over in the league. Perri has been pushed to the fringes, keeping his place mainly in the FA Cup.
League place now the issue
Lucas Perri’s basic numbers help explain why this has become a talking point. Transfermarkt lists him with 16 Premier League appearances and two FA Cup games this season. However, he has not been the regular league starter for some time. He has only made two starts since being dropped, both in the FA Cup.
That matters because the Brazil angle in Nicola’s report is also easy to understand. Perri has already been in the national-team picture. A goalkeeper sitting on the bench in league action will always feel vulnerable when World Cup-related competition starts to sharpen. He wants more future call-ups.
Now, a return home is starting to be viewed positively by the player’s camp. This is after he suffered a “terrible fall from grace” at Leeds United.
The line being pushed is that regular football and a leading role would help rebuild his momentum, with Perri said to believe he could have been closer to the Brazil squad picture had he been playing consistently in his home country. Brazilian clubs are said to be already monitoring the situation.
Transfer background and what comes next
Leeds United paid Lyon a fixed €16m (£14.0m) for Lucas Perri, with a further €2m (£1.6) possible in bonuses. This is according to reports on the official French side of the deal.
So Leeds have a goalkeeper who has just delivered one of their biggest cup moments in decades. Yet the broader picture still suggests he is second in line in the league.
Nicola’s information should be treated carefully for now, because there is no sign yet of a formal move or concrete exit process.
Still, the situation is becoming easier to read. If Perri believes regular football is essential for his Brazil hopes, and if people around him are starting to view a move back to Brazil as a realistic solution, then Leeds may have a decision to make sooner than expected.
For now, Brazilian clubs are only watching, but a goalkeeper signed for €16m (£14.0m) and pushed out of league prominence will naturally attract attention.
