Liverpool tracking elite replacement – Would become one of world’s best at Anfield
by Pedro Reinert · Sport WitnessLiverpool are already having to think about what comes after Alisson Becker, and the profile of his potential successor is becoming clearer.
If they move for a replacement, the expectation is for someone already performing at elite level. Diogo Costa fits that description on current form.
The FC Porto goalkeeper has been one of the most consistent performers in Europe this season. He has kept 26 clean sheets in 53 matches across all competitions. In the league, he conceded just 13 goals in 31 games.
That means his team allowed one goal every 211 minutes with him in goal. His goals conceded per 90 stands at 0.43.
In addition, Costa has saved 56 of 71 shots on target. That gives him a save percentage of 78.87%, placing him among the most reliable goalkeepers in top European leagues. He is one of the main reasons why Porto is coasting towards another league title.
And according to Portuguese outlet Apito Final, Diogo Costa is now emerging as a serious option for the Reds. The report claims the club are considering him as part of their planning for a potential goalkeeping transition.
Liverpool preparing for possible Alisson exit
Alisson remains a key figure at Anfield, of course. However, interest from Italy is starting to create uncertainty around his future.
Because of that, Liverpool do not want to be caught off guard. Instead, they are mapping out options early in the window.
Diogo Costa’s profile aligns with that approach. At 26, he offers both experience and long-term value. He is also a regular for Portugal, with over 40 international caps.
It’s believed a transfer to Liverpool could cement his status as one of the best in the world.
At FC Porto, he has developed into a leader from the back. His composure in possession and command of the area are seen as key strengths. That combination would make the transition smoother if Alisson departs.
Competition and cost to consider
Diogo Costa’s will remain high on Liverpool’s shortlist, but he is not the only name under consideration.
Apito Final says the club are also monitoring Bart Verbruggen, Robin Roefs and James Trafford. Each represents a different level of investment and development timeline.
Costa, however, is already operating at a high level. That comes at a cost. His release clause is set at around £52m (€60m). For a goalkeeper, that is a significant outlay. Still, replacing Alisson would always require a major investment.
He was a target to two of Liverpool’s rivals last year. Manchester City tried to sign him before they saw the opportunity to get Gianluiggi Donnaruma. And Manchester United had his name on the shortlist to replace Andre Onana.
Now the Reds may have their chance to bring in another elite goalkeeper to Anfield.
What happens next
This situation is still at an early stage. Liverpool are assessing the market rather than pushing for an immediate deal.
Much will depend on Alisson Becker’s future. If serious offers arrive, the club may accelerate plans quickly.
For now, Diogo Costa stands out as a logical candidate. He brings consistency, experience and strong underlying numbers.
That combination makes him one of the few goalkeepers who could realistically step into Alisson’s role without a major drop-off.
