Chelsea send official to Portugal – Enzo replacement and others on transfer agenda

by · Sport Witness

Chelsea were again in Portugal this week, with the club’s scouts watching FC Porto’s 0-0 draw with Sporting in the Taça de Portugal semi-final second leg.

That has become a regular part of their work lately. Portugal keeps offering young talent, tactical variety and a useful mix of ready-made names and longer-term bets.

According to A Bola, Chelsea were among the clubs represented at the Estádio do Dragão, and this was the kind of match that gave them plenty to think about.

On paper, the game finished goalless and Sporting went through thanks to their first-leg advantage. On the pitch, though, it was far from a flat affair. Possession was fairly even, but the match often felt like attack against defence.

Porto pushed, pressed and finished 18 times. Sporting managed only three shots and spent long spells protecting their lead. That gave Chelsea a chance to assess players in very different scenarios.

Froholdt gives Chelsea plenty to consider

If Chelsea were looking for a midfield performance to take seriously, Victor Froholdt gave them one.

The Danish midfielder may not have arrived as the biggest headline name, but he produced one of the more complete displays on the pitch. Froholdt won most of his duels, recovered 10 balls, completed 28 of his 31 passes and had four shots. That is a strong all-round return in a tense knockout match.

Given the recent noise around him as a possible future replacement for Enzo Fernández, this was useful viewing for Chelsea. Froholdt showed energy, composure and the ability to stay involved on both sides of the game. In a match where Porto had to keep forcing the issue, that mattered.

Gabri Veiga also offered something worth noting. He helped Porto progress through the middle and gave the side some punch between the lines. He is not the same profile as Froholdt, but he brought technical quality and physical edge in a game that demanded both.

Quenda return, wide threats and Chelsea links

Geovany Quenda was another obvious reason for Chelsea’s presence. Since he already belongs to the London club, this was effectively a live check on one of their own future players.

This was Quenda’s first start since a serious injury, and that made his display especially relevant. He looked lively, showed good physical availability and gave Sporting an outlet when they could break forward. He is still building rhythm, but there were enough flashes to suggest the recovery is moving in the right direction.

Chelsea target Maxi Araújo also had one of those nights that may not scream for attention, but still tells scouts a lot. He worked hard, helped contain William Gomes and combined well with Quenda on Sporting’s left. In a match that asked for discipline and sacrifice, he delivered both.

William Gomes, meanwhile, remained a dangerous one-v-one threat for Porto, even if his execution was uneven. Oskar Pietuszewski improved after a quiet first half and became more involved after the break. Both have been linked with Premier League clubs, so this was another useful live reference point.

Defensive names also in the frame

Chelsea’s interest did not stop with midfielders and wide players.

Diogo Costa remains one of the most reliable goalkeepers in Portugal and one of the more trustworthy young options in Europe. He was not overloaded, but when Sporting finally found space late on, he stayed alert and made an important intervention in stoppage time.

Eduardo Quaresma also had a solid game for Sporting. He stayed composed, handled his defensive work well and adapted to the demands of a match in which Sporting had to spend so much time without the ball.

There was also frustration around Gonçalo Inácio. Recently linked with Chelsea, the centre-back left the pitch injured very early, which ended any chance of a proper assessment on the night.

Good outcome for Chelsea

Chelsea target Victor Froholdt

Chelsea saw Victor Froholdt put together a very strong midfield display. They saw Quenda return to the starting line-up after injury. They also got fresh looks at targets like Maxi Araújo, William Gomes and Diogo Costa in a match with real edge and pressure.

That is what makes nights like this useful. Porto’s dominance in shots and Sporting’s defensive resistance created two very different tests within the same game. Chelsea’s scouts got to watch players solve very different problems.

And that, more than the 0-0 scoreline, was the real value of the trip.
