Newcastle the ‘hottest lead’ for player with €12m bid tabled – Few million more gets it done
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessNewcastle United have made an offer for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas as they plan further goalkeeper changes this summer.
BILD report that ‘it was only a matter of time’ before a bid arrived for the 28-year-old this summer and that has now happened. According to their information, Newcastle have made their move.
Newcastle offer €12m
The newspaper reports that the Magpies have offered €12m for Moritz Nicolas as they seek a successor for Nick Pope. Eddie Howe’s side had long been considering Alexander Nübel, but he is now on his way to Besiktas.
So, they have turned their attention to Nicolas. But a €12m offer ‘is nowhere near enough’ to make Gladbach director of football Rouven Schröder waver.
Nicolas has a contract until 2029 and Schröder is envisioning a fee of €15m for him, at the very least. If he had any choice, he would like to keep the current number one.
“We will certainly be holding further talks with players who are due to leave us. But Mo is an integral part of our plans for the new season!” he is quoted as saying.
Newcastle’s new number one
But he also accepts that anything could happen this summer. “The transfer window is still open for a long time yet; you can’t rule anything out,” he added. BILD say that if any suitor were to meet Moritz Nicolas’ asking price, Gladbach would enter into negotiations.
The German side currently hold the power as a previously available release clause expired on July 1st. Schröder is free to negotiate the fee he wants.
Newcastle are currently the ‘hottest lead’. They want to return to Europe next season ad believe making Nicolas their new number one can help with that. They have already signed youngster Ewen Jaouen this summer, but it has been made clear he is a long-term prospect.
Moritz, it appears, is the man that they’d like to be number one. And negotiations are now underway with Gladbach to make a deal happen.
