Southampton favourite reveals horrifying Secret Santa gift episode

Ever received a Secret Santa gift at work and though ‘what a load of s**t’? Well former Southampton defender Toby Alderweireld has, sort of.

Het Laatste Nieuws cover comments from the former Southampton man today in which he reveals a quite horrifying Secret Santa story from his time with the Saints.

He was appearing on the HLN Football Podcast, during which they were discussing the tradition of Secret Santa.

Alderweireld was a part of that on many an occasion during his playing career, including during his first year at Southampton. He played for the Saints on loan from Atlético Madrid, spending one season with the Saints.

He was a key player that year, impressing in Ronald Koeman’s defence before then making a move to Tottenham Hotspur the following summer. Southampton finished seventh that year, exceeding expectations after a summer exodus.

It was a memorable year, to say the least. It appears one of the more memorable moments happened behind the scenes, though.

Alderweireld shares a quite horrifying Secret Santa story, in which he was fortunate not to be the recipient of perhaps the worst gift ever.

“Those weren’t nice presents, but they were meant to really make fun of each other,” he said.

“I still remember a story from Southampton. Something fantastic, but also very strange. Someone was handed a box, but it smelled absolutely awful.

“Someone else had put a turd in a box, themselves. ‘My friend, you are so s**t in the box,’ was the message. ‘You’re such a drama in the penalty area.’ The recipient opened it and threw up.

“I was playing my first year in England at the time. ‘Okay, okay, that’s how it works here,’ I thought to myself. But it was special, yes.”
