“I apologise” – Arsenal player breaks silence after World Cup woes

by · Sport Witness

Arsenal defender Piero Hincapié has apologised for the red card that ended Ecuador’s World Cup campaign, while also paying tribute to Granit Xhaka ahead of his return to North London.

The centre-back started all four of Ecuador’s matches at the 2026 World Cup before his tournament ended prematurely when he was sent off during the defeat to Mexico that eliminated Sebastián Beccacece’s side.

Speaking to Extra after returning to Ecuador, Hincapié admitted emotions got the better of him during the incident and apologised to supporters.

“It was because of the heat of the game. I forgot that I couldn’t cover my mouth! I apologise, but you can be sure I’ll always give everything for the national team.”

The Arsenal defender said the disappointment should become a learning experience for Ecuador as they look towards World Cup qualifying and the Copa América.

“This will shape us for future competitions. We hope to achieve better things and continue growing as a group.”

Granit Xhaka praised

Piero Hincapié also reflected on the leadership Ecuador will lose when senior figures such as Enner Valencia and Hernán Galíndez eventually step aside.

He admitted replacing players of that stature would be a major responsibility but backed the next generation to continue the national team’s progress.

“It’s a huge responsibility to continue without them because they’ve been role models for us. But I think everyone will give everything so Ecuador keeps growing.”

The 24-year-old also highlighted another influential figure from his career.

“I’ve learned a lot from the players I’ve shared a dressing room with. Enner Valencia with the national team and Granit Xhaka during my time at Bayer Leverkusen are people you can always learn from.”

Back to Arsenal

Hincapié will now return to Arsenal after a short break in Ecuador, with Mikel Arteta’s squad preparing to defend their Premier League title.

The Ecuador international heads into pre-season as one of Arsenal’s key defenders after signing a contract until 2031 earlier this summer, and will be looking to put the disappointment of Ecuador’s World Cup exit behind him before turning his attention to club football once again.
