Sunderland offer expected in ‘coming days’ – Wolrd Cup villain

by · Sport Witness

Sunderland could make a decisive move to sign Matías Galarza, after he decided to leave River Plate this summer.

The Paraguay international will return to the club after spending the first half of this year at Atlanta United on loan. He played 847 minutes from 13 matches for the MLS side.

He also starred for the national team at the World Cup, managing a goal and an assist, and would have caught the attention of a few clubs, including Sunderland. On a different note, he made himself something of a villain for being the protagonist of rough Kylian Mbappe treatment when he faced France.

Last week, Sport Witness covered claims from Greece that the Black Cats, Olympiacos, Getafe, Monza and RC Strasbourg have watched him.

River Plate’s stance encouraging for Sunderland

El Intransigente picks up on that and covers the latest on Régis Le Bris’ side and other clubs’ interest in the midfielder.

Matías Galarza has to return to River Plate, where he has no future, despite impressing at the World Cup. Manager Eduardo Coudet has left him out of his plans and the club have already informed him of their decision.

Therefore, the 24-year-old will be on the move and he’s already looking for a new club this summer.

Sunderland, Monza, RC Strasbourg and Getafe are all keen, and River Plate are expecting to receive concrete offers from these clubs in the ‘coming days’. There’s nothing to indicate the type of offers the South American club are expecting.

Agent working to find solution

Sources close to the Paraguayan have informed the outlet that his agent is expecting to receive formal approaches soon.

The representative is already working on taking him away from the Argentine club, either on a loan or permanent transfer.

It’s unclear where Matías Galarza will end up this summer. River Plate, led by their new sporting director, Pablo Longoria, intend to complete his exit as soon as possible.

Sunderland could take advantage of this to sign him on loan. The fee is unlikely to be high if the Black Cats or other suitors decide to buy the midfielder.

That’s because his contract lasts until December 2028, and Transfermarkt value him at €3m. The highest value was €3.5m in September 2025, while at River Plate.
