“Anatomy of a failure” – Luís Guilherme’s West Ham exit edges into despair

by · Sport Witness

Winger Luís Guilherme left West Ham United in January in a move that seemed to have unleashed his potential. But the shift in Portugal has been… quick.

Only a few weeks ago, the tone around the Brazilian in Lisbon was very different. As we covered at the time, the early signs at Sporting CP were encouraging.

He was getting minutes, starting regularly, and even earning strong praise from Rui Borges. A local newspaper compared him to Brazilian legendary forward Rivaldo. The narrative was clear: Sporting had unlocked something that West Ham could not.

Fast forward a little over four months, and that mood has changed.

From hype to harsh headlines

Portuguese newspaper A Bola have now gone in hard. In a harsh column titled “Anatomy of a failure”, editor Luís Mateus questions issues from all around the club. One of them is Luís Guilherme. He reflects whether the deal has delivered anything close to expectations.

“In Alvalade, they believed that Luís Guilherme, with Premier League rhythm, even if not a starter at West Ham, and three years younger, would be the good deal. So far, that has not been confirmed.

“In 10 league games, he hasn’t had a single decisive goal-scoring opportunity,” he wrote.

He’s right. In the Portuguese league alone, Luís Guilherme has played 10 matches without a single decisive action for a goal. No goals, no assists. For a winger in a title-chasing side, that stands out.

Across all competitions, the picture is slightly better on paper. He has made 20 appearances, scored once, and played 887 minutes. Also, that goal came in the cup against AVS SAD, a newly-promoted side that beat the local record for fewer top-flight points in history.

In short, he had a few flashes off brilliance, but nothing sustained.

Patience already running thin

The language has shifted to frustration after all. The same player who was praised for his versatility, work rate and intelligence is now being judged on output – and the output is not there.

As always, Sporting need to be fighting for titles. They needed impact, not just potential. And while Luís Guilherme arrived with the label of a long-term project, the expectation in Lisbon rarely allows for slow burns.

And from a West Ham perspective, this is exactly the kind of scenario the club may have anticipated.

They sold for around £12m (€14m) plus bonuses, accepted a loss on the original £19.5m (€23m) investment, and kept a sell-on clause. At the time, it felt like a reset. Now, it looks like a well-timed exit.

That does not mean Luís Guilherme will not come good. He is still 20, still highly rated, and still adapting. But the early “life after West Ham” glow has faded fast.

And in Portugal, patience is already wearing thin.
