Nottingham Forest youngster has another admirer – Talks paused by off-pitch turmoil
by Pedro Reinert · Sport WitnessNottingham Forest continue to field interest from Brazil for Jair Cunha. However, there is little sign they are ready to let the young defender leave.
The 21-year-old has become one of Forest’s most closely watched fringe players over the past few months. Flamengo, Botafogo, Cruzeiro and São Paulo have all been linked with moves. That’s largely related to his limited opportunities in England.
Even so, recent reports from Brazil have suggested Forest still view the centre-back as part of their long-term plans, making any move far from straightforward.
Another club joins the queue
According to club insider outlet Colina 1927, Vasco da Gama have now made Jair Cunha their leading defensive target for the current transfer window.
The report claims the Brazilian side had already opened talks over a loan with an option to buy. However, negotiations were put on hold following the court ruling that temporarily removed Pedrinho from control of Vasco’s board.
That sets Vasco apart from some of the other clubs linked with Jair. While several Brazilian sides have explored the situation, the latest report suggests Vasco had already moved beyond simple enquiries. However, off-field events brought discussions to a halt.
It’s fair to recall the two clubs already have a line of communication open after recently agreeing Cuiabano’s loan move to Vasco.
Forest stance remains the key
Whether Vasco revive those talks could ultimately depend less on the Brazilian club than on Forest themselves.
When São Paulo explored a similar loan deal, reports indicated Forest quickly made it clear they had no interest in that type of agreement. Brazilian reports have also stated the Premier League side continue to see Jair Cunha as part of their sporting project despite his limited minutes.
That is perhaps the biggest obstacle facing Vasco. The player continues to attract admirers in Brazil, but Forest have consistently shown little willingness to open the door, even for a temporary move.
