“I went and spoke to Philippe” – Norwich City player on Clement playing-time stance

by · Sport Witness

Norwich City’s Emiliano Marcondes has now talked down an immediate exit, but knows there’s no future with the Championship side.

At the end of 2023/24 season, AFC Bournemouth released him and he club-less for a few months.

Norwich City then opened their door to the Dane in October 2024, and in April 2025, the Canaries exercised their option for another year.

This season, the attacking midfielder has played 401 minutes from nine matches under Liam Manning’s orders, failing to score or assist.

In November, Philippe Clement replaced Manning as manager.

Marcondes retained his place under the Belgian, managing a goal and two assists from eight matches.

His situation changed drastically in 2026 as he’s made only one appearance so far, against Sheffield United on January 4th. The 31-year-old has been in and out of Clement’s squad since then.

No long-term future at Norwich City

Tipsbladet have published a detailed interview with the former Brentford man. He talked about his current situation and both his immediate future and what happens beyond this season.

When asked what the manager has said to him about not 12 matches in a row, the player explained his situation has been clear since January.

“I started playing under him as soon as he arrived. I did okay, too, and I scored and assisted,” he said.

“But as soon as we hit the new year and the transfer window opened, it was a fairly clear signal that was sent to me.

“I went in and spoke to Philippe, and the club said they wouldn’t extend my contract this summer. The club will therefore focus on the players available now. The club said I should look at my options and try to leave already in January.

“I understood the situation well. I’m glad they told me so clearly. Sometimes there’s not that clear communication, so I was actually happy about that.”

No immediate exit agreed

Two days ago, Sport Witness covered claims from Sweden that Emiliano Marcondes was on the verge of leaving the English club. He could move to Sweden or Norway, where the windows will be open for few more days.

Tipsbladet specifically asked whether a contract termination is possible. Responding to that, Marcondes explained: “No, that’s out of the question. I don’t know where that came from. My commitment is here, and I travel with and am around the team.

“I’m also told they need me in training. If an opportunity arises on the field, I’m ready to seize it.

“That doesn’t mean I can’t transfer now, though. It does, however, require the clubs to reach an agreement with each other. But I’ve been told that my future isn’t here, so I’m talking to clubs in leagues where the transfer window is still open. I’m in ongoing discussions with various clubs.”

Marcondes’ contract and value

The Dane has less than six months left on his contract at Norwich City. This permits him to hold negotiations and sign a pre-contract with another club, to join them for free in the summer.

Transfermarkt value him at €800k, and as things stand, he will leave Norwich City as a free agent.
