Wolves aiming for £60m from transfer – Have to send 10% elsewhere
by Kaustubh Pandey · Sport WitnessJoao Gomes’ Wolves exit is now near certain due to relegation, with Manchester United appearing a candidate.
This week, Sport Witness covered Gazzetta dello Sport’s claims on Napoli interest in the midfielder. There was confidence the player would be keen on a move to the Partenopei, having also pursued a deal in January.
Wolves’ price-tag was causing problems in the winter window but there was a feeling relegation would grant them a discount. Napoli have signed several Premier League players in recent years and Gomes was seen as the next target.
Things may not be easy for the Italian side, with Manchester United deemed as a more obvious destination.
Wolves aiming high
Journalist Ada Cotugno spoke to Napoli Radio Centrale and she specifically focused on the Naples club’s chase for Gomes.
She made their interest clear but also indicated the player’s desire to end up at Manchester United.
Cotugno said – via TuttoNapoli: “Does Wolverhampton’s relegation favour Joao Gomes’ departure? Those who are relegated don’t ask too much for the sale of a player. After this year, Wolves could make an Anguissa-style sale for Joao Gomes. They value him at £60m, and they also have to give 10% to Flamengo.”
The journalist indicated Gomes may not be too keen on playing in Italy. Even Chelsea could be an appealing destination to the 25-year-old.
“He’s a regular starter, but young and can improve. He’s in the market and is being monitored by many Premier League teams, including Chelsea and Manchester United. If one of those teams comes knocking, it’s difficult to be tempted by Serie A.”
Manchester United should pursue move
The way Gomes has performed in the last two Premier League seasons, he is indeed too good for the Championship. He has been one of Wolves’ best players in a disastrous season, playing 31 times.
That is why Manchester United should sense this as a massive opportunity. The British press has previously spoken of their interest in the midfielder and there won’t be a better time to pursue him.
Michael Carrick’s side need at least two midfield signings. In recent seasons, they have shown an inclination for Premier League proven stars. That is why Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha were signed last summer.
Gomes would present a similar deal and the Red Devils can do a lot worse than him.
