This is exactly what the NBA Cup was created for. Two success-starved franchises face off in the final of the in-season tournament at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday, with the San Antonio Spurs led by fit-again megastar Victor Wembanyama, and Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns showing exactly why the New York Knicks have been installed as the Eastern Conference favorites.
This is their first meeting of the year, but they split a pair of wildly entertaining showdowns last season. Sandro Mamukelashvili and Towns top-scored with 34 and 32 points respectively when the Spurs won 120-105 in March, after the Knicks won an unforgettable Christmas classic 117-114, a game that saw Wembanyama and Mikal Bridges run riot with 42 and 41 points. Wemby also put up 18 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in an extraordinary losing display.
What was lost in the euphoria of the 7ft 4in center's triumphant return at the weekend was that moments like these may be vanishingly rare, given his injury record. Wembanyama returned from 12 games out to play the starring role in the standout team performance of the season, but his availability can never be taken for granted, especially on the big occasions.
SGA and the Thunder had been on a 16-game rampage and No.17 had looked a certainty before Wemby's introduction. Although Devin Vassell topped the scoring charts with 23 points, and Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox each scored 22 – and all deserve huge credit for keeping San Antonio on track during Wembanyama's latest extended absence – the Frenchman's 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks completely changed the game.
Brunson has arguably been the player of the NBA Cup, and he's on fire right now. He scored a season-high 40 points to help the Knicks down the Magic, and has now dropped at least 30 in four straight games – and four straight NBA Cup games. Despite trailing the Pistons in the Eastern Conference standings, a blistering run of nine wins in 10 have put the league on notice. However, 3-point shooting has been a bed-rock of their success, and the Spurs held the Thunder to a season-low 41.3% from the field.
