It seemed like Egypt were on course for a famous victory after racing into a 2-0 lead, before the reigning world champions turned the game on its head in the closing stages.

But of course, with the World Cup, the football wasn't the only thing dominating the conversation.

Before long, social media erupted with debate over a series of refereeing decisions and VAR calls, with pundits and fans questioning several key moments in the match.

Egypt's disallowed goal was completely against how this tournament has been refereed.

You can't have a light touch where you don't give fouls for minimal contact and then rule out a goal through VAR for a very minimal hold of the shirt.#ARGEGY

Either both are fouls or neither is a foul. But they’re not going to re-referee they told us. #itsshit https://t.co/Up2xj7sXNJ

If VAR had gone any further back in that Egyptian move Tutankhamun would be involved. How far do you go back? Probably right decision but what a pity, what a goal that would have been. 80 yards, majestic move, precise passing, would have been one of the goals of the tournament,

Egypt manager Hossam Hassan was among those frustrated, going as far as accusing officials of influencing the outcome of the game.

"A penalty [for us] was ruled out, it was not even checked by the VAR and our second goal was remarkably, for whatever reason, disallowed," he shared. "We have all seen the shirt pulled back [by Mac Allister] and not even a VAR check."

"There seems to have been pressure on the Argentine side on the referee that has brought about this outcome."

"I want to put it in beautiful words and say, ‘Hard luck,’ but we have been treated unfairly, and it has been an injustice," he added.

"We looked better than the reigning champions – better in everything – but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it," Hassan continued. "Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champion in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running."

"In football, there are sometimes external factors that go beyond the technical aspects. The world champion received support at every level."

Forward Mostafa Ziko echoed the sentiments, insisting Egypt had been "hard done".

"It was a rigged game," Ziko suggested. "It wasn’t our fault. That referee… it seems like this match was rigged. We were winning 2-0, and he kept coming at us. Congratulations to Argentina on another World Cup, it seems."

What was Hassan's 'X' gesture about?

The controversy didn't end with the post-match interviews.

During the game, Hassan was shown a yellow card after crossing his arms into an 'X' towards referee François Letexier.

According to FIFA, the ‘X’ gesture is the signal that players, coaches or match officials can use to report alleged racist abuse, prompting referees to activate the governing body's anti-discrimination procedure, which can ultimately lead to a match being paused or suspended.
