Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has been appointed Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), marking a historic first for the country more than 70 years after the body was founded.

The announcement was confirmed on Sunday, March 29, in a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Adamu replaces Véron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down to contest the presidential election of DR Congo’s football federation, FECOFA.

“Prior to his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a pivotal role in the successful organisation of major continental competitions. His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by the congress at its meeting held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo,” NFF Director of Communications Ademola Olajire said.

The federation also celebrated the milestone in a post on 𝕏, writing: “Congratulations to our own Samson Adamu who has been appointed Acting General Secretary of CAF.”

Adamu’s elevation follows years of work behind the scenes in African football administration. As Director of Competitions, he played a central role in organising flagship tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and major club competitions.

In his new role, Adamu becomes the chief executive of CAF’s General Secretariat. He will oversee day-to-day operations, supervise staff, manage competitions and ensure governance and financial standards are met. He will also represent CAF in engagements with key stakeholders, including FIFA and national associations.

The appointment is viewed as a boost for Nigeria’s standing in continental football governance. While Nigerians have previously held senior roles, including former CAF vice-president Amaju Pinnick, none had reached the organisation’s top administrative office.

CAF is currently navigating a period of transition following Mosengo-Omba’s exit. Adamu is expected to provide stability until a permanent General Secretary is appointed at the next General Assembly.

Since its formation in 1957, the CAF secretariat has been led by a small group of administrators, with Mosengo-Omba becoming the first non-North African to head the body before his resignation.
