Tobi Amusan Set For Heavyweight Hurdles Clash At Prefontaine Classic

by · Naija News

World record holder Tobi Amusan will line up against Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark in a stacked women’s 100m hurdles field at the Prefontaine Classic in Hayward Field on July 4.

The meeting, the ninth stop of the Wanda Diamond League season, brings together four of the event’s leading names at a track where Tobi Amusan has already etched her name into history.

It was on the same Hayward Field track that the Nigerian stormed to a world record 12.12 seconds at the 2022 World Championships. She returned the following year to claim the Diamond League title, completing a run of three straight crowns between 2021 and 2023.

Now based in Jamaica under coach Glen Mills at the Racers Track Club, Amusan has not raced since the World Championships in September 2025. Her comeback in Eugene is expected to draw close attention given her pedigree at the venue.

Russell arrives as the athlete to beat on current form. The American secured Olympic gold in Paris and claimed her first Diamond League win in Silesia last August with a series record of 12.19 seconds. She is chasing a maiden overall Diamond League title ahead of the season finale in Brussels.

Compatriot Stark also heads into the race in strong shape after a breakthrough 2025 campaign. She set meeting records in Keqiao, Stockholm and Paris before clinching bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo.

Williams, one of the most experienced athletes in the field, adds further quality. The Jamaican claimed her second world title in Budapest in 2023 and remains a consistent contender on the global stage.

The 2026 Diamond League season begins in Doha on May 8 and will span 15 cities before the final in Brussels on September 4 and 5.
