Incoming Liverpool star Giorgi Mamardashvili has warned Alisson Becker he faces a fight for his future from next season.

Mamardashvili will join the Reds next summer from Valencia to provide competition for Alisson in goal. The Brazilian has been Liverpool's first choice between the sticks since arriving from Roma in 2018.

He has developed a reputation as one of the Premier League's best keepers, though his contract enters its final two years next summer. Liverpool are already considering a succession plan, by bringing in Mamardashvili.

The Georgian starred at Euro 2024 and has impressed with Valencia, though they are enduring a difficult campaign this season. While they are currently at the wrong end of the table, Mamardashvili has insisted he will be ready to play in a top-level team when he moves to Anfield.

"I was attracted by the Liverpool project when the club's representatives met with me to sign me. I will fight for the starting goalkeeper position, even if the current goalkeeper does not leave the team,” he told Georgian TV’s First Channel

"I am fully focused, 100 percent, on helping my team keep its place in La Liga. I will work hard for that. We have not been lucky with the schedule at the start of the season.

"We have had to play against big teams like Barcelona, Atlético and Athletic. Now there are matches coming up in which we can take points. We look to the future with hope."

Alisson had been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League over the summer window. But he appears ready to fight off a challenge from Mamardashvili to keep his place in Arne Slot's starting line-up.

“The club needs to prepare for the future. We are not going to last forever here. I am getting old! No, for a goalkeeper I am still young, I have a lot of energy and I still have much to give for this club," the Brazilian said in August.

"I want to give to the club as much as I can, but they have to prepare for the future. They [Liverpool] have and they will do for different positions as well. We have so many important players with the contract expiring and the club needs to organise themselves.

“I think it was a good idea, I knew about [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think.

“They are doing the right thing in my point of view, but on my side, as long as I have my contract here and as long as I am happy here, the club is happy with me, my family is happy here, I will stay.”
