The International Cricket Council (ICC) will announce the schedule for the 2027 World Cup, which South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe will host. Australia will enter the tournament to defend its sixth title, which it won against India in 2023 in Ahmedabad.

World Cup will have 14 teams, unlike the previous edition, which had just 10 teams. The tournament will adopt a new three-stage competition format intended to ensure meaningful contests from the opening match through to the final. Fifty-seven matches will be played across 12 venues.

Under the revised structure, the tournament will begin with a new “Super Series” involving the teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th in qualification. These three teams will compete in a round-robin format, with only the winner advancing to the next stage.

The successful team will then join the remaining 11 qualified nations in the second phase, where two groups of six teams will contest 30 matches. The top three teams from each group, along with the next highest-placed team across both groups, will qualify for the newly introduced Super 7 stage.

The Super 7 will see all seven qualifying teams play each other in a single round-robin league comprising 21 matches. The top four teams will progress to the semifinals, with the first-placed side facing the fourth-ranked team and the second-placed side meeting the third-ranked team. The winners will advance to the final.

Eight teams that will receive direct qualifications will be judged by their ODI rankings as on September 30, 2026. India currently top the leaderboard. However, the surprises are rooted lower in the table, where two-time champions West Indies will miss out on a direct berth, alongside Ireland. The two Full-Member sides will join eight other teams in the ODI World Cup qualifiers in early 2027, out of which four teams will proceed to the World Cup.

ODI World Cup 2027 Schedule Announcement Live Updates: Ball change

Women’s cricketers have been using balls meant for junior cricket, but henceforth differently measured balls will be used for that segment. “For women’s and junior cricket, manufacturers have often produced a single ball for both categories.

New limits have now been introduced, establishing three distinct size and weight specifications for men’s, women’s and junior cricket,” the ICC stated.

As per the new definition, the ball, when new, shall weigh not less than 5 ounces (142 grams), nor more than 5.25 ounces (149 grams), and shall measure not less than 8.46 inches (21.5 centimetres), nor more than 8.66 inches (22 centimetres) in circumference.

ODI World Cup 2027 Schedule Announcement Live Updates: Pink ball rule

The ICC decided that the use of pink balls must be mutually agreed upon ahead of a Test match, and it remains binding for the whole contest. “As a trial, pink balls may be used in daytime Tests by mutual agreement to reduce loss of play due to bad light. The use of a pink ball must be agreed before the start of the Test and once agreed, must apply for the duration of the match,” the ICC said in a statement. “The decision cannot be changed after the match has started. Switching from a red to a pink ball is also not allowed once the match has commenced,” it said.
