International tighthead prop Jermaine Ainsley is set to return to the Highlanders.

The 30-year-old has signed a two-year contract that keeps him in Dunedin for the 2027 and 2028 Super Rugby Pacific seasons.

In a statement, Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph believed the acquisition was well-timed as the squad built towards next year.

"Having Jermaine back is a major boost," Joseph said.

"He’s a competitor, he’s durable, and he’s played a lot of high-level rugby.

"He’ll add leadership to our pack and help drive the standards we are setting for 2027 and beyond."

Ainsley said the opportunity to come back south was one he and his family were eager to take.

"My family and I are excited to be joining the Highlanders," Ainsley said.

"I didn’t think I’d ever get the opportunity to play in New Zealand again, let alone for the Highlanders, so I’m really looking forward to this next chapter.

"I can’t wait to rip in with the team next season. It looks like a pretty strong squad that’s been growing over the last few seasons."

Ainsley made 38 appearances for the franchise between 2022 and 2024 before moving overseas.

He has played 30 games for French professional rugby union team Lyon, gaining further elite experience.

Ainsley will arrive in Dunedin for the upcoming preseason alongside his wife Emily and their children Keanu, 4, Zion, 1 and Maia, 5 months.

His technical scrummaging skills and high work rate are expected to strengthen the forward pack significantly when the new rugby year begins. — Allied Media
