Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have parted ways with long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey as the five-time champions continue a major overhaul of their backroom staff ahead of IPL 2027. The Australian's departure marks the end of an eight-year stint in the coaching role, bringing an end to a significant chapter in his association with the franchise.
Hussey first joined CSK as a player in 2008 and represented the franchise across six seasons. After retiring from international cricket, he returned to the team as batting coach in 2018, working alongside head coach Stephen Fleming. Fondly known as 'Mr Cricket', Hussey played a key role in CSK's success, with the franchise winning IPL titles in 2018, 2021 and 2023 during his coaching stint.
CSK paid an emotional tribute to Hussey while announcing their decision to move on.
"From the very first season in 2008, you have been an integral part of the Chennai Super Kings family," the franchise said in a statement on social media.
"Your journey in Yellow has been defined not just by the runs you scored and the players you mentored, but by the dedication, humility, and unwavering commitment you brought to this franchise over the years."
CSK concluded the message by saying, "Your place in our history will forever remain special, Hussmeister. Once a Super King, always a Super King."
The franchise has appointed former India pacer Zaheer Khan as head coach following Fleming's departure. Gareth Batty, who leaves Surrey after guiding the county to three consecutive County Championship titles between 2022 and 2024, has also joined CSK as an assistant coach for IPL 2027.
WHO ARE THE OTHERS LEAVING CSK?
Hussey is not the only prominent member of CSK's previous setup to leave. Bowling coach Eric Simons has also parted ways with the franchise after being associated with the team since 2018. He is set to join Fleming's coaching staff with England's Test team, while former fielding coach James Foster has also moved on.
CSK have also parted ways with assistant coach Rajiv Kumar, physiotherapist Tommy Simsek and trainer Greg King. Former India pacer Mohit Sharma has been brought in as bowling coach as the franchise reshapes its support staff.
The overhaul follows three disappointing seasons. After winning the title in 2023, CSK finished fifth in 2024, tenth in 2025 and eighth in 2026. The franchise will hope the revamped coaching group under Zaheer helps restore consistency and brings the Super Kings back into title contention in 2027.
