Rafael Nadal is set to return to the tennis court in the United States for the first time since retiring from professional tennis, with the 22-time Grand Slam champion scheduled to feature in an exhibition match in Las Vegas on February 27, 2027.
Nadal will headline The MGM Slam presented by Capital One at T-Mobile Arena, organisers announced on Monday. It will be his first appearance in the United States since he retired in November 2024, bringing an end to a career that included 22 Grand Slam singles titles and a record 14 French Open crowns.
The Spaniard last played in Las Vegas in March 2024, when he faced compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition match at the same venue. The contest attracted a sold-out crowd and was streamed worldwide on Netflix.
Nadal has since stepped away from professional tennis, although he recently returned to the court to mark the 10th anniversary of his tennis academy in Manacor, Mallorca. His upcoming appearance in Las Vegas will give fans another chance to watch him play, nearly two and a half years after his retirement.
'LOOKING FORWARD TO PLAYING IN VEGAS AGAIN'
Nadal said he remembered the atmosphere at T-Mobile Arena from his previous visit and was looking forward to returning without the demands of the professional tour.
"I remember how impressive it was to feel the energy of a full arena in a city like Las Vegas," Nadal said.
"After that match in 2024, now I return in a different stage of my life, without the pressure of the tour but with the same passion for this sport. I have always loved competing, and even if my professional career is finished, that feeling never really goes away."
The former world number one thanked MGM Resorts and Capital One for inviting him to the event. He also spoke about the opportunity to play in front of fans who had followed him throughout his career.
"Being on court again at T-Mobile Arena, against one of today's top players, is a beautiful opportunity to enjoy tennis and give something back to the fans who supported me for so many years," he said.
"I hope everyone who comes has a great time, and I will do my best to give them a night to remember."
The organisers are yet to announce Nadal's opponent, the other players in the field or the format for the 2027 event. More details are expected in the coming weeks.
NADAL'S LAST MATCH IN LAS VEGAS
Nadal faced Alcaraz at the Netflix Slam in March 2024, during what became his final season on the professional tour. The exhibition brought together two generations of Spanish tennis, with Alcaraz having emerged as one of the leading players in the men's game.
Nadal struggled with injuries towards the end of his career and played only a limited number of tournaments in his final seasons. He announced his retirement in October 2024 and made his last competitive appearance for Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga the following month.
His career included 14 French Open titles, four US Open crowns, two Wimbledon titles and two Australian Open trophies. He also won singles gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and doubles gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Nadal finished his career with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, placing him among the most successful players in men's tennis history.
